Ultra-Easy Headway Teamwork

ETO's headway coach, using secure public road-top lane lights, signals each driver their ETO vehicle headway (key to a fast smooth safe trip).

Headway = time the vehicle front will take at current speed, to get to where the front of the next vehicle ahead is now, in the same lane.

1.8 seconds standard safe minimum headway gives expressway drivers enough safety reaction time, flows 2000 vehicles per hour in each lane.

A vehicle's expressway headway time is always in 1 of 3 ETO ranges:

 early    ok     late

Pavement-embedded ETO signal lights spaced 10 metres (33 feet) along lane centrelines, guide each driver in real-time, to use best headway (speed and spacing) for fast safe steady efficient low-emissions traffic.

Drivers see mostly  ok  signals. Most  early  /  late  signals are not caused by driver inattention, but are simply ETO adjusting headways as drivers decide e.g. to: change lane / speed, enter / exit expressway.

Upstream of merge zones, ETO unifies speeds and gives vehicles extra headway time so at merge, headways settle gently back to 1.8 seconds.

Prevents congestion, especially during merging. Sustained safe fast going. Relaxed drivers need use much less braking and lane changing.

ETO times signals to individual drivers, to orchestrate smooth overall traffic. As low as 20% driver participation can visibly improve travel.


Vehicle-Specific Ultra-Easy Headway Signals

ETO periodically {signals} every driver their current headway range:

  "early" => LOW headway => too FAST and/or too CLOSE.  
                        {amber double-flashes, motion driver back}

 (OR) 
  "ok" => OK headway => SPEED and SPACING are ok.          
                  {two green signals, blink at driver ...on-blink-on...}

 (OR) 
  "late" => HIGH headway => too SLOW and/or too FAR.      
                      {blue single-flashes, motion driver ahead}

ETO headway signals are vehicle-specific for precision, yet also slightly visible to nearby vehicles to help co-operation (without distraction).

Most  early  /  late  flashes are avoided --  ok  signals show advance headway "hints" (one  ok  signal light blinks later than the other).

Understand headway safety as time the driver has, to handle whatever happens, up to the place ahead where the next vehicle front is now.

Understand headway cost as amount of lane traffic flow capacity used by the vehicle now. A classic safety vs efficiency (time vs flow) choice.


  ABSOLUTELY NO SPECIAL VEHICLE EQUIPMENT NEEDED

"Smart road" ETO requires **ABSOLUTELY NO** change to vehicles, works with every vehicle (type, make, model, year) licensed today / not (includes: bus, motorcycle, truck, special load, emergency, rogue).

In-vehicle **STRICTLY OPTIONAL** ETO-aware ACC (adaptive cruise control) unit uses ETO signals to automate driver's headway control.

ETO is only installed in expressway lanes where (and only signals as) needed to prevent congestion. Additional applications are possible.

High-tech devices and thin conduits grow in use embedded in roadways (e.g. lane marker leds, traffic / structure sensors, de-icing sprayers).
